Dear friend of the Ministry,
As this New Year begins, we are excited to see what God is going to do with and for Taste & See Ministries. I want to personally thank you for your support in the past.
An opportunity has come our way that I would like to share with you. Last year we participated in "The Festival of Foodies". This is an event that is held at SCC and is open to the public. It gives us a chance to share with the public what we do and they get to sample our different teas. It was a very successful event for us. It brought alot of attention to the Ministry and we made alot of good contacts. We have the same opportunity again this year.
On December 5, we had to close the tearoom for a couple of months due to the fact that my husband fell and fractured his pelvis and shattered his wrist. We will be re-opening on February 1, 2009 and we have lost several months of revenue due to the closure.
We would really like to participate in "The Festival of Foodies" again this year. The booth fee is $325. They have kindly discounted the booth fee to $250 but we need help with this amount. I am asking if you would be interested in sharing in this opportunity to invest in a tax deductable donation of $50 to go towards the booth fee. If you can help with this, your response is needed by January 9th. You can send your tax deductable check to Taste & See Ministries 903 W South Dragoon Dr Colbert, WA 99005
Thank you once again for your past support and for catching the vision God has for this ministry.
Blessings,
Thada Ziegler

I know you have all been bombarded with lots of bad news during this period of extreme bad weather. While this is not disaster news, we do need your help on Garland in getting the word out that our merchants and services are all open for business in spite of the huge snow berms. We have temporarily lost our on-street parking, but there is plenty of off-street parking behind the Garland Theater, the Price-Rite store and in the strip malls between Wall and Howard. All the streets are clear and the sidewalks are shovelled.
The businesses have been working hard and spending money to stay open and accessible. Once you get to Garland you can still enjoy a hot espresso, eat teriyaki, look at some great art, buy a pair of warm boots or a new sweater for your child or grandchild, take in a movie, read a book, make a bracelet, kick back in a sports bar or have a hamburger. We're still worth the trip!
We are working on removing the snow berms but it will take time and we need emergency resources from the city to help with that. I will keep you informed on any new developments.
Thanks as always for your support of the Garland Business District and the arts.

Nearly Half of Spokane Women 40 to 69 Not Receiving an Annual Screening Mammogram
A national trend, Inland Imaging hopes to reverse declining mammogram numbers
Recently, national data was released that indicated a decline in the number of women receiving their annual screening mammogram. The information prompted Inland Imaging to investigate mammography trends in the Spokane community. Unfortunately, the results indicate Spokane women receiving an annual screening mammogram are less than those in the national average.
Nationally, the American Cancer Society reports that screening mammography rates appear to be stabilizing or slightly declining after increasing for more than a decade. In 2005, 66.5 percent of women 40 and older reported having a screening mammogram in the past two years, versus 70.1 percent in 2000.
The news is startling, considering the proven importance of identifying and diagnosing breast cancer early. It is recommended women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The American Cancer Society reports early detection of breast cancer greatly improves the chance of successful treatment.
Inland Imaging has created a yearlong campaign, called “Every Women Can,” for 2009 to encourage women to receive an annual mammogram. To start, Inland Imaging hired a local research firm to collect data to identify factors that either deter or encourage women to have annual screening mammogram.
The data indicates that the main reason women do not have a mammogram is lack of time. Women feel they are too busy or do not have the necessary resources to fit a mammogram into their busy schedule. Inland Imaging will take the necessary steps to inform women that advancements in digital mammography have significantly reduced the amount of time a mammogram takes. The exam can be completed in about 20 minutes. Inland Imaging also now offers screening mammography on a walk-in basis to make it as convenient as possible.
Another barrier reported by the surveyed Spokane women is a lack of insurance or limited funds. There are many local and national resources that provide funding to low income or uninsured women that would pay for a mammogram or greatly reduce the price.
In addition, a small number of women from the survey reported that they did not believe they were at risk and the exam was not necessary. Some women are under the impression that because they do not have a family history or do not carry a genetic mutation associated with breast cancer, they are immune. However, of the more than 192,000 American women who learn they have breast cancer every year, only 5 to 10 percent of them have a hereditary form of the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute.
The results indicate that women who had not received a mammogram in the last year said they would be influenced to have one upon the advice of their personal physician. Additionally, results show that women who receive an annual reminder or if their doctor’s office orders the test for them, they are more inclined to have a screening mammogram.
In an effort to reach women outside Spokane’s city limits, Inland Imaging works closely with the Sacred Heart Medical Center mobile mammography coach to offer the exam to women in rural communities. The traveling unit visits businesses, retirement centers, clinics and hospitals throughout the Inland Northwest. Radiologists at Inland Imaging read the films and report the results to the women's personal physicians.
Inland Imaging mammography staff and equipment have been accredited by the ACR. A patient can schedule their own screening mammogram, but must have a physician to whom the results will be sent. There are three Inland Imaging locations performing mammograms including Holy Family Imaging Center, Sacred Heart Imaging Center, and Spokane Valley Imaging Center.
Nosey Parker and KHQ have entered into a partnership to attach Nosey Parker to a new initiate they are starting. It is called "For Women Only". They will be putting a Nosey Parker Rovian (3D image that talks!) on the front page of their website and Nosey Parker will be the image associated with Fashion, Shopping and Health! KHQ gets just under 10M hits a year and we are very excited about their new promotion and tapping Nosey Parker to represent their initiative. If you did not know, KHQ has the farthest TV reach of any of the TV stations, going into Canada, Alaska and across Montana. If you haven't been talking about the book to all your customers, you need to let them know you are in it. Make sure your posters are up! We want you to sell out of them! Remember, this is all about co-petition, not competition. Support all who are trying to live the American dream of having their own business.
We are also launching a new Home Page for NoseyParkerGuide.com in conjunction with the year-long KHQ promotion. The Home Page will be a portal site that every woman would love to have as their own Home Page. It will contain info on fashion, events, weather, calendar of local events for women, access to social networks (facebook, myspace, LinkedIn, etc.) and email. You will be able to blog from the Home page and this info will be in the center for all to see. All ad spaces will be video capable as well. I am so excited about it and you should be as well. We are working very hard to promote the guidebook and shopping locally.
Here are upcoming initiatives you should plan for and look forward to:
1. KHQ Launch - TV/Internet
2. Clear Channel KISC.FM - Nosey Parker business of the week (video that will run on KISS website for a week and be promoted all week on their station). More info to come soon. Want to be a Nosey Parker business of the week? We will also run the video on our website. And, KHQ has offered to feed into their page for women only as well. THIS IS A GREAT PROMOTION!
3. Sacred Heart Women's Show - April 2009
4. Bloomsday - we will be giving out 1000 Nosey Parker tshirts to be worn during the race.
5. Nosey Parker Shopping Day - we will be having a set date once a month for all businesses per mapped area. This will be publicized on the website, directly to subscribers and on KHQ. We will notify you in advance.
6. Tourism Director - we hired Jimmy Addington, formerly of Holland America, to head up all of our tourism opportunities. He is working with the tour groups, hotels and entities like AAA.
7. Purple Turtle to do a training video for all listers on selling the guidebook, featuring Nosey Parker herself. You will be able to log into the website and watch it.
If you have any questions, please let me know. You will be glad you are associated with Nosey Parker. So much going on. I have attached the ad that is going in Metro Spokane magazine next month. We are trying to get it into some other entities as well.

Thank you for your past auction donations! Last March, gifts like yours helped the Spokane Guilds' School & Neuromuscular Center raise over $103,000 to provide early intervention services for over 220 children in Spokane County, birth to three, with developmental disabilities. With your help, we hope to surpass this achievement in the coming year.
Our 28th Annual Dinner Auction will be held on March 21, 2009 at The Doubletree Hotel in Spokane, Washington. Please consider donating an item or service that may be auctioned that evening. All proceeds go directly to provide assessment and therapy services to children like Julia (pictured below):
Julia was diagnosed with Stickler Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that can affect vision, hearing, muscles and joints. She also has a condition called Pierre-Robin Sequence, in which the jaw doesn’t grow out properly and causes a cleft palate. Because Julia had trouble breathing and eating, she was given a tracheostomy (trach) and a feeding tube. She began receiving services from SGS&NMC at 12 weeks of age when therapists began traveling to her home because she was medically fragile.
Julia has had the trach removed and works weekly with a therapist to become more comfortable using her mouth. She communicates by using over 60 words in sign language, is ahead of her age group cognitively, and her physical skills are now age appropriate. Julia’s parents are hoping that she will soon be able to begin in a group at the SGS&NMC. Mom says, “We feel blessed that the SGS&NMC is here to help us face each of Julia’s challenges.”
You will be helping children like Julia by supporting our upcoming auction. While donated items need not be delivered prior to February 20, 2009, we do ask that you notify us of your intent to make a donation as soon as possible, to ensure proper acknowledgement in our auction booklet.

Please feel free to contact me at 509-326-1651 or by e-mail at jwright@guildschool.org with any questions. On behalf of Julia and the other children at the Spokane Guilds’ School & Neuromuscular Center, thank you for your thoughtful consideration of our request.
